In obedience working trials, dogs participate in a series of obedience, agility and tracking exercises of ascending difficulty.
This year we have been fortunate to have land offered to hold the Working Trials within 15 minutes of the main venue. The availability of land in this area in October has certainly been a limiting factor as Labour Weekend falls in the middle of lambing. This is the reason for the trials timetable running from Wednesday to Saturday as only a limited number of tracks will be able to be run on each day.
The main base for the trials will be at Glendale on Riverside Road. This is central to all the land for the UD, WD and TD and will be suitable for the UD and WD control exercises.
The UD tracks will be held on a neighbouring farm, the WD and TD tracks will be spread between the Mosgiel-Outram highway and land adjacent to SH1.
The UD will be held on Friday although if there are too many entries to complete it in one day it will continue on Saturday.
The WD and TD will be run between Wednesday and Saturday depending on entries. The preference will be to run on Thursday and Friday with Wednesday and Saturday only if required. Competitors will be advised of the running order and times after entries have been received.
Both the WD and TD will have small areas off the road for a limited number of cars. Viewing of the UD will be from the road. If you are watching the tracking please DO NOT walk in any paddocks.
The control exercises for the qualification and competition side of the UD and WD trials will take place at the farm venue. For the Inter-Region Trials Team competition the dogs will complete the control section at the main venue on the Sunday, in between the Inter-Region Obedience Team competition Tests.
At the request of the farmers all competitors need to produce a veterinary certificate to show their dogs have been dosed by a vet for sheep measles within the previous 30 days. This is just the common worming tablet (Drontal or Drontal Plus) normally used to worm dogs, but it also covers the Taenia Ovis tapeworm, which infects sheep and goats.
While we have a bit of control over the land we will also try to have some pull over the weather conditions – all rain dances have ceased in Southern Region and positive vibes are being sent skywards!! So hopes are high for a warm, fine weekend.
