Waitakere Stadium

Work has started on Waitakere’s new sports complex which is due to be opened mid 2004. The development is being carried out by the Waitakere Regional Sports Trust with the Waitakere City Council as a key funding partner.

The development is a multi purpose indoor Sports Complex, with two additional sports fields and an all weather athletic track around the current Waitakere Stadium ground (in Central Park Dr, Henderson). It will provide an integrated, affordable, convenient and accessible sporting, recreation and leisure experience, with a focus on participation as well as hosting major events.

Funding for the project has come from the Council, ASB Charitable Trust, Waitakere Licensing Trust, Portage Licensing Trust, New Zealand Lotteries Commission, Waitakere Regional Sports Trust and a personal commitment from Bryan Heron, a long time philanthropist of sport in this city.

Due to open in mid 2004, facilities will include:
  • A 6 court indoor stadium with seating for up to 5000 people.
  • Function rooms, offices, café, bar, meeting rooms, changing rooms, a gym, crèche, and a climbing wall
  • Development of 2 sand based sports fields
  • Development of an international standard all weather athletics track.
  • Improved access and increased car parking
  • A headquarters for Sport Waitakere, Don Oliver Youth Sport Foundation, Heron Coaches Foundation, Waitakere Basketball and a number of other sporting codes and community groups
