In 1956 the Southern Cross Staffordshire Bull Terrier Society Inc. was formed in NZ by a dedicated group of Stafford enthusiasts. It is the oldest Stafford Club in the Southern Hemisphere. Since that time the Society has gone from strength to strength, with Headquarters in Wellington and branches in Hawkes Bay and the South Island. Its members are throughout NZ therefore you are never too far from help or assistance.

The Society is affiliated to the NZ Kennel Club (Inc.) and through membership of the Society, we can endorse applications to join the New Zealand Kennel Club(Inc.) should you wish to exhibit your Stafford at the many All Breeds, Agility and Obedience Shows held throughout the country.

The Badge of the Southern Cross Staffordshire Bull Terrier Society (Inc.) was adopted by the Society in 1956 upon affiliation with The New Zealand Kennel Club as an associated Specialist Breed Club and is, in fact, the Badge of the Southern Counties SBT Club in the United Kingdom. The Southern Counties Club were gracious to allow the Southern Cross Society to use this Badge as the first overseas SBT Club to be formed outside the United Kingdom and hence the date of Incorporation on the Badge 1937 refers to the Southern Counties Club, not to the Southern Cross Club.
The dog depicted on the badge is that of MILKERN GUARDSMAN owned by the late Fred and Olive Gill originally of the Southern Counties Club who brought this dog to New Zealand when they emigrated here in the 1950s. F.L. (Fred) Gill was a long time Honorary Vice President of the Southern Cross SBT Society and associated closely with the Society from its foundation.
The motto on the Badge Nemo me impune lacessit translates as No-one provokes me with impunity or perhaps more literally as No-one challenges me with impunity
About Staffordshire Bull Terriers:
The Staffordshire Bull Terrier originated in Great Britain, derived from a cross between the old Bulldog and English White Terrier (now extinct), and was officially recognised by the British Kennel Club as a pure breed in 1935.
Staffords are very intelligent, being loyal and devoted, with special emphasis on their reliability with children. They are strikingly muscle bound, extremely strong and when showing their teeth in a snarl, look frightening, but they are people loving, have wonderful personalities and are extremely lovable. A Staffordshire Bull Terrier desires, more than anything else, to be with, and please, their owner/s.
One must remember that the Stafford will stand its ground when challenged by an unfamiliar dog and should always be adequately controlled in public places. Staffordshire Bull Terrier owners have an obligation to Society, to ensure their properties are correctly fenced so that their dogs are not allowed to publicly roam free.
Staffords adore car rides, going for walks, romps on the beach and most of all, being on your lap, cozying up to you when watching TV. Whatever the activity, “From the time it awakens in the morning until the quiet of night, a Stafford lives life to the fullest.” (Linda Barker, writing in The Staffordshire Bull Terrier in America).

Fun Day, February 10
Sunday 7th February saw us all again at Harcourt Park for our Annual Picnic. This is a great venue as we have lots of space, it is sheltered and there is shade for the dogs. The Upper Hutt Council are very accommodating and we were fortunate this year to have very good weather, plus lots of people and dogs coming, which was fantastic to see. A barbeque, races (which included the Drag the Bag race, Balloon race, Fill the dog Bowl race and Biscuit race), great company and lots of prizes made for a fun day. To see the photos click here
On Sunday 1st Novemer 2009 we met at Harcourt Park, Upper Hutt and we all went on a Mystery Walk. Only about 7 dogs participated but we had lots of fun.
On the 17th August the Club held a Ribbon Parade at the NZKC. A good number of people came along to support this event - new members and also new puppies. Our Judge was Sam Cowie. Alot of fun was had by all. To view photos click here to take you to the Flickr site.
2009 saw the establishment of the South Island Branch of the Southern Cross Staffordshire Bull Terrier Society. Shows, Ribbon Parades and friendship are planned for this year with more to come in following years. Contact person for the South Island is Sharon at donalg@ihug.co.nz. 2009 Championship Shows
The club held back to back Championship Shows on Saturday, 27th June 2009 at the NZKC, Porirua. Our two judges were Joanne Hartnett (Anvilhart)from Australia and David Levy (Alidav) from the UK. Once again, it was a very successful day with 65 entries. Many spectators, catering, raffles and wonderful dogs made it a day to remember. We had a wonderful afternoon picnic held on the 11TH MARCH 2007 at Harcourt Park, Akatarawa Rd, Upper Hutt. There was lots of fun and games, a free sausage sizzle, many tiring races and most importantly, a chance to meet other Stafford owners. There were about 40 families, with about 40 dogs. Wellington turned on a glorious day and it was fantastic to see so many new and old friends, along with their favourite friends - their Staffords (and some other breeds as well).
On the 25th November 2007 the Society held a Ribbon Parade at the Titahi Bay Obedience Club with 18 entries, followed by some fun events. Our Judge was Lucy Murdoch. The weather was good, there were lots of children, lots to eat and a large raffle. All in all, a fun afternoon with our beloved Staffords.

2006 was our 50th Golden Jubilee year!! It is 50 years since the Society was first established in New Zealand, which is something to be very proud of. To celebrate we had 3 Championship Shows (1 Trophy Show to be dedicated to Marion Forester) held on April 29th and 30th in Wellington at the Porirua Kennel Centre. Three overseas judges attended (Harry and Mary Coble of Surestaff (UK) and Barbara Anne Beaufoy of Wyrefare(UK). A celebratory dinner was held on the Saturday night. What a successful and fun weekend we had, with about 60 entries for the three shows. The committee worked hard to make this a very special event, and it was great to see many spectators and old members coming along in support. On Sunday 20th November we held a Fun Day/Picnic at Harcourt Park in Upper Hutt. It was a lovely venue, with lots of open space for events and trees for some shelter. The club provided a sausage sizzle and soft drinks over lunch. Fun was provided by way of a lucky dip for the dogs, races for the children, adults and dogs, agility races, a treasure hunt and raffles. Although we had gusty winds, it was warm and sunny. It was so good to see about 50 people and 20 dogs at this event - most of who were new faces.
2005 Championship Show
Our 2005 Championship Show was held 23rd September2005 in Christchurch during NZKC National Dog Show, in conjunction with the Canterbury Combined Terrier Club and at their invitation. Our Judge was Dr Sarah Hemstock of Jolihem Kennels, UK, with a very pleasing entry of 50 SBTs. 1998 was the last time a Southern Cross Staffordshire Bull Terrier Society held a Championship Show in the South Island, and it was wonderful to meet and catch up with our Members down there, a number of the current SCSBTS Committee were in attendance. Club Activities
The Society magazine The Bulletin is published monthly as an e-bulletin. It is sent by email to members. This has enabled members to be kept up to date with Club news and provides a good avenue for advertising. It also provides members with information on upcoming events, show results and general information on the Stafford and news from the Societys members. Should you require assistance in purchasing a Stafford, rearing and training or just want to meet other Stafford owners, please contact our Secretary for a chat and/or membership to our club.
Our Picnic Fun Days are a great way to meet and make friends with other Stafford owners. We organise races and games with the dogs. There are lots of prizes,raffles, food and fun (and hopefully, sun!). This is a great opportunity to talk and listen to Stafford Breeders or just pet owners, to learn more about the wonderful breed of Staffordshire Bull Terriers.
