Welcome on board Maggies new family. Maggie is such a lucky wee Lakkie, Soon to travel South to her new family she is just going to have such a special new home with a family who know the breed, have owned Lakkies and know them. Susan a special welcome I am delighted you have found us.
Thanks to Susan and Heather who worked with us to get Maggie to Auckland for her flight.
Thanks to Jannine who gave her a suportive and caring home while we waited for Susan to find us.
This kennel is so blessed with all the wonderful support it gets.via the owners of our dogs. Thanks, Thanks Thanks. I could not do it without each and every one..
Nellie also has a great new home thanks to the hard work of the Tauranga Team. A special thanks to Liz and Maureen for the ongoing support they are giving Nellie's new family. Some years ago now Liz an Maureen took on George St Patrick from a family that was disolving. He is now much loved and has a home for life.
Each year one or two wee Lakkies find themselves in situations where families who through sickness, family changes or a decision to go and live off shore in need of a new home.
For these wee dogs special carring homes are sought.. It is not their fault they find themselves in this sad situation.
National Dog Show 2009: Thanks to all those who contributed to the great line up. Best New Zealand Bred and Best of Breedwas Nova ,YTK Bute, Best Open YTK Kendal, Best Intermediate Maggie, YTK Revision, Best Junior Shelby, YTK Sensation and Best Puppy Sid, YTK Endeavour

Kauri Cottage is a small kennel, breeding for excellence and to preserve the breed, which has falling numbers world wide and becoming endangered.
The kennel has a policy of not breeding from dogs under two years or over five years. We also take only one litter a year from a bitch.
Our focus is to breed pups which are both physically healthy (sound in bone, body mass and mind) resulting in good conformation (shape) whilst at the same time being psychologically sound. This is demonstrated by good and reliable behaviour. Temperament will always be the first consideration (over conformation) when pairing for breeding.
Fall in love with these wee dogs and you will never forget them - We love them to bits.
We are often asked how trainable these dogs are. My response to this is I have had a ten month old on stage in the Wizard of Oz. They are very intelligent, Like all terriers they want to please but being intelligent they want also to have your respect and shouting and yelling at them will get you no where. It only serves to break down trust and respect. Yes they are very trainable
Another question often asked is how much coat work is there. Then answer would have to be as much or as little as you wish to do. But all dogs should be combed and cleaned. If you keep this dog in its wool coat if will loose colour and will h.ave a full wool coat which is no alergic. Many of our owners like this 'Miniture Wheaten' Look but if you want a coat that is both hard with a soft undercoat then weekly work is required. Some people hold the opnion that the coat needs regulary removing this is incorrect and the process is uneccessary if you groom weekly or bi weekly.

The kennel has imported quality overseas blood lines. In this way we believe that we are preserving and building a healthy gene pool and avoiding inbreeding.
All our pups are born in the home and are integrated into day to day life within the home. This is essential during the early imprinting days. At no time is a bitch in whelp left alone and afterwards she is carefully monitored for the following days. She is also attended at all times during the nights.
The kennel supports those who purchase our pups and encourages contact between owners and the kennel, especially for support regarding any concerns that may arise during the formative years.
Advice and assistance is also given with grooming and training, if required.
We invite inspection of our dogs and their living accommodation and are happy to introduce you to other members of our growing 'Lakkie' family. We have dogs and their families in all parts of New Zealand who are happy to be introduced to you.
TO OUR NEW 2008/9 FAMILY MEMBERS -WELCOME- WE HOPE YOU WILL HAVE YEARS OF FUN AND HAPPINESS WITH YOUR NEW FAMILY MEMBER.
DO NOT FORGET TO VISIT OUR SCRAP BOOK AND MEET OUR DOGS AT PLAY New pictures are added regularly, so check back soon!!!
We have had prospective owners tell us that they have been told that we breed 'PETS', as opposed to 'show' dogs. We are proud to breed 'PETS' as this indicates that our dogs will succeed, not only in the show ring, but also (and much more importantly) in the home. This supports our purpose of breeding for both character and conformation (looks). Looks are of little use without positive behaviour and reliable temperament. Any one can tell you that they are selling you a top quality show dog but at 8 weeks they can only really tell you that the pup is showing potential.
Please read this testimonial from one of our owners-
"After losing our old dog to cancer, we did a lot of research into finding the best dog for us. We searched the net (especially the NZ Kennel Club site) and spoke to numerous owners and breeders. Lee didn't make it too easy for us; in fact we joked that it would be easier to get approved by Child, Youth and Family!!!. but we understood that she is totally committed to placing her pups in the very best homes. We waited a while for our pup to be born and learnt all we could from reading and talking with Lee, while we waited. The wait was totally worth it. We have the perfect dog- the best dog we have ever owned. She looks fantastic (we have had show judges praise her conformation) and she has the most sound temperament possible. This is so very important to us as we have many children and people with intellectual impairments among our friends and family. We know that Lee sells her pups for slightly less than some others but that's because she's in it for the love of the breed and not for the money. It certainly doesn't mean her dogs are inferior in any way, in fact I doubt you will find a better Lakeland anywhere!!! "
Jane and Graham (and Tui)
A special thanks to Graham & Jane, Karen & Steve, and Nora for showing their dogs. All are now holding Championship Certificates with Kendal holding his GOLD !! I wish you all could see the wonderful young dogs we have around the country, all are Champions in their own right.
2008 National Dog Show: We were successful in gaining a Best Open Bitch with Nova. Congratulations Kendal on a Best Intermediate of Breed.
James, whose sister holds World Junior and Reserve European Lakelands and was also placed at Crufts, was not placed this year. Better luck next year James.
One always wonders how judges judge minority breeds.
They see so few and do not have the Standards on the table to recap for consideration. If they have been seeing a particular type then will they penalise another type which they have not seen possibly believing it to be incorrect.
The Lakeland is meant to reach and drive in movement not mince like many of the wires do. His chest should be sprung and not slab-sided, The head is meant to be balanced, neither too strong nor too refined; neither short of muzzle nor sniped. Height at maximum is 37.5 cm but above all, balance of the dog is paramount. Over the years we have seen the legs reduced, a variety of couplings and chests that are as wide as a Welsh down to the very narrow. Top lines have also varied from traditional to quite curved. Many dogs have good drive but poor reach. Judges fail to note this. To recognise reach (forward movement) the dogs front paws should touch the ground in line with the dogs nose. Most fail to do this and it is a structural fault that is prevalent in many show dogs.
In their homes our dogs continue to be a success; keeping owners busy and happy .
You can purchase a supplement on Lakelands for only a few dollars from the NZKC. Please contact them. The article 'Charlies Story' has been edited and so has lost its focus. For original copy of this story please contact me. I will be happy to send it to you free of charge.
We have purchased our WWW domain and will hopefully get our site up and running in 2009 !!. It will be linked to the button on the top right hand side of this page.

Two litters expected end of year. Phone to register interest.
7 year old Femaile looking for a good home see main page for details or ring.
If interested please contact us by phone or email
We have also selected the Mums-to-be ,who will only be put into pup only if we have sufficient new owners with a commitment to the breed and, in particular, to the puppy they are welcoming into their home.
We do not breed our bitches if the pups are not pre-sold and so you are encouraged to contact the kennel to find out about these wonderful dogs and the possibility of getting on the breeding season's wait list.
A pup is secured on a $50, non refundable, deposit basis only. This is to ensure that pups have a homes to go to that has been pre-approved by the Kennel.
We will ask questions relating to the the suitability of one of our dog for you. Please do not be offended. We support our pups/dogs and want to ensure the most suitable homes are secured for them, and that you are fully aware of the dogs needs and can identify how that will 'FIT' with your family needs.
We do not line or inbreed. Nor do we breed from a bitch under two or over five. Each bitch has only one or two litters in her lifetime. If pups are exceptional we may seek to have a third litter but this is rare.
Our kennel has grown due to the suport of the owners and we are ever grateful for this.
Our pups cannot be purchased through Pet Shops. Nor are they sold on the basis of 'no questions asked'
We have only a limited number of litters each year and we aim to secure only the best possible placements for our pups.
You will need to have knowledge of the breed, a secure property and the time to give the pup during its early development, especially the first 18 months
All pups have quality blood lines and many are from NZ Champions who have overseas blood lines. We are aware that pups of this quality may cost more elsewhere but we challenge you to review our pups and judge the quality for yourselves. In preparation for the proposed 'Preferred Breeder' program our pups come to you from stock which has been DNA Profiled and are microchipped and wormed, with first vaccinations completed. It is our constant endeavour to continually improve conformation (looks) and maintain wonderful temperament thus ensuring success in the home (most importantly) and in the show ring.
We could charge more for this endangered breed but we are breeding to preserve and many of the most suitable families would be excluded by a higher cost of purchasing a pup..
We welcome inspection at anytime.
We have a strong network of Lakeland owners and someone in your area would be proud to introduce you to their much-loved pet.

An exciting way to be involved with ensuring this wonderful breed will remain in NZ is to become one of our growing Lakeland family.
We offer a lease agreement ,under which we refund the cost of your pup if we breed a litter from her. We never breed from our bitches before they are two years old or after the age of five.
All expenses and the refund will be paid by the kennel. This includes the spaying of your girl.
Interested- then talk to us to find out more. The programme is proving very successful; allowing us to look at our breeding bitches as they mature and to select only the very best to breed on with.
We feel this method provides opportunities to enhance both conformation and temperament thereby ensuring the Lakeland's future in New Zealand.
While the method may not be the most profitable way to breed but it is certainly the best way to to ensure the breed's future wellbeing and preservation.
The dogs and I have made a lot of new friends with genuine Lakeland lovers.
This is breeding at its best. Your wee girl is in her own home as she grows, sharing family experiences and becoming aware of the world at large.
Puppies are brought up in the home of the breeder in order that both the bitch and pups have 24 hour care and attention and ensuring that the owner does not have her/his daily routines disturbed..
If you would like to discuss any aspect of these arrangements with us, or just learn more about the breed, please contact us. We are more than happy to share information.

Originating from the Cumberland in England these pups check in at approx 180- 230g.
Their goal in life is to become a family member. They are full of fun and wish to be involved in everything you do. Work or play it's all one to them as long as they are involved.
A spirited, intelligent individual, this young pup will not fully mature until the age of three and while it is quick to learn may not always respond to your requests in the tender years.
The kennel provides training information to assist you with bringing these little chaps up to be one who is much loved at ALL TIMES by ALL PEOPLE Do not underestimate this little chap if you do not gain its respect and lead it will.

Buster, from pup to young adult |
| |
This is young 'Buster'. At ten months he has been table trained to stand correctly and is now groomed and sporting his new adult coat.
Even after a pup leaves the Kennel full support is available to its new owner for as long as they desire. Information on the history of the breed, feeding, training and grooming requirements and equipment can be provided.
We recommend that you take care with what you teach a young Lakeland. What makes you laugh today may make you cry tomorrow. And remember your are the teacher, the Alpha dog, the leader. Your pup learns what you teach it !!! or what it learns by itself !!!! If you don't want or like a behaviour then ensure it is not encouraged and that the pup is clear you disapprove
If you are unsure about suitable games and early training ask us. People often say to me "your dogs so loving and such fun"- It is not magic; it is knowing the breed and responding correctly during puppy and young adulthood. Most of our owners have done a wonderful job and we compliment them on it The outcome is happy dogs and happy owners
We can also assist with where to purchase the grooming tools, potions and lotions to keep the young/adult looking good and smelling good.
The dog has a two layer coat. The under coat is soft and provides heating for the dog. The upper coat is wiry and acts as a waterproof jacket. If left ungroomed the undercoat dominates and the dog then looks a little like a small Wheaten.
Some owners prefer this look and find it easier to keep but it is still important to ensure hygiene is attended to, eg. eyes, nails and butts

Fully grown a friend for life |
| |
This young adult has still to fill out a little. Now at the age of two, she has reached full size and weighs 8Kg and measures 15 inches at her shoulder bone (withers). This is within the breed standards.
Her appearance is friendly, strong and workmanlike.
If you want to know more about these great little dogs please contact the kennel by email or by phone.
We are always happy to talk about Lakkies
Thank you for taking the time to read this web page. Remember to have a look at our scrap book where our emphasis is on family dogs.
It goes without saying we love our Lakies very much!!
